United States consumer prices rose 0.7 percent in December pushing the annual inflation rate to 12.2 percent, the highest since 1946. Energy costs and food drove most increases while gasoline rose over 50 cents a gallon year over year.
Iraq condemned the three Arab gunmen who seized 10 hostages at Orly Airport and said the hijackers were arrested in Baghdad. Paris reports say the hijackers released the crew after commandeering a French jet to Lebanon, but Beirut authorities refused landing. Police and terminal security were tightened at Orly after a two hour meeting with officials.
American Motors Corp announced rebates up to 600 dollars on 1975 Gremlin Hornet and Matador models with options to take part of the rebate as cash or extend the buyer protection plan. The program runs from today through February 28, amid GM Ford and Chrysler rebate activity. Dealers report higher weekend sales in some spots.
Capitola California fired Henry Murren a 36 year old 900 a month officer after he was deemed too friendly for the job City Manager Max Kludt said Murren could have been a public relations asset but warned the approach wouldn t work in modern policing Hundreds of letters supported him but city officials stood by the decision and noted the lack of arrests as a problem Murren said he wanted to be helpful and approachable and not feared by the public
Jeb Stuart Magruder, released from prison January 8 after seven months of a 10 month to four year sentence for his Watergate role, says he will lecture college students about prison reform in a spring tour and then pursue a business career. Weather outlook shows light rain then possible snow with 20 percent chance tonight and cooler conditions tomorrow.
FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley says the bureau keeps files on members of Congress with unsubstantiated public tips but denies misuse. House Civil Rights Subcommittee Chair Don Edwards says Kelley and Atty. Gen. Saxbe will testify on the issue. Edwards notes past denials and calls for full disclosure of the activities and policy.
Lawrence senior Doug Andrews demonstrated a 12 horsepower backpack engine that powers a bicycle and can propel users at 50 to 60 mph. He promoted its use for hang gliding and self transport as spectators watched on Crescent Drive.
