Gov. George Docking warned Republican leaders in Topeka that he will not call a special session to handle budget work. He accused them of flirting with balking on duties and said any fallout to state departments would be their responsibility if they fail to act.
Charles Adams Kite 46 of 810 N H St died early today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He ran the Purple Pig Tavern at the same address. Born November 28, 1913 in Eufala Oklahoma, funeral plans are pending. He is survived by wife Lila. three sons Patrick Adams Kite Michael Lee Kite Charles Lee Kite of Tacoma Wash. daughter Mrs Walter Sneegas. stepdaughter Mrs Burton Purdue. mother Mrs A L Kite. brother Lee Cruse Kite. sisters Mrs George McGillery and Mrs John Thieben.

Fire at the Lawrence Paper Co roller house Tuesday likely started from oil on a roller. Fire Chief John Miller said damage was slight. main loss was shutdown time. A light bulb near the roller may have sparked the blaze. sprinklers helped keep it under control until firefighters arrived.
Topeka marshal Marion Doss, facing an ouster suit by Atty. Gen. John Anderson, says the action could aid his run for Shawnee County sheriff. Anderson alleges Doss was convicted in California of a felony and lacks civil rights restoration, plus accusations of releasing bond knowledge for a fee and withholding prisoners. Doss cites a California pardon and asserts his record is clear. Ross disputes the charges as bunk.
TOPEKA AP A Republican legislator proposed reducing Kansas sales tax from 4.214 to 2 percent. Gov Docking favors a 1 percent cut for one year then return to 2 percent. Democrats introduced a bill for the 2 percent plan, while GOP leaders largely oppose tax rate changes. Rep E R Woodward argues his 2 percent proposal is more realistic than Docking’s.

A Navy lecture outlines plans for manned balloons reaching 150000 feet with a 3900 pound gondola to study human responses to space. The project envisions a 50 million cubic foot balloon with four or five crew aboard, testing physiological effects of near space in a controlled ascent from a carrier off the West Indies.
Kansas Senate member Phil Lip J. Doyle of Beloit filed as a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 6th District congressional race. Doyle had said he planned to seek the seat held by Rep.
