Warden and lawmen coordinate manhunts as abducted teacher Lewis Dresser is freed in Pawhuska.

President Roosevelt ordered the Federal Trade Commission to act as judge in complaints by small merchants about monopolistic practices under the National Recovery Act. The order allows a dissatisfied complainant to seek review before the FTC if not satisfied with other government agency actions, except by the Justice Department. The move follows a public clash between Hughes, Johnson, recovery administrator, and Senators Borah and Nye over protections for small businessmen.
Bartlesville Oklahoma January 20 AP reports Lewis Dresser a 26 year old rural school teacher was freed unharmed at Pershing ten miles south of Pawhuska after nearly 24 hours on the road with two escaped convicts Jim Clark driving and the other believed Bob Brady in the vehicle. Dresser said they forced him to drive and warned him to stay silent. A wide manhunt followed with officers from city county state and federal agencies patrolling highways and visiting known hangouts. Dresser reached Bartlesville to notify authorities and stayed with publisher N. D. Welty before going to a police station to rest. The escape tied to a Memorial Day breakout from the Lansing Kansas prison involved seven men.
Sheriff W W Wyatt captured La Clede Stevens 37 of North Platte Neb who allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife Frances 30 and her father John De Rolf 56 at a Ker sey Colo filling station last night Stevens who earlier broke into the De Rolf home climbed into his car and drove away without a word Mrs De Rolf was not harmed in the attack
Albert W. Bates and Harvey J. Bailey, Urschel kidnaping convicts, are on hunger strikes at Leavenworth. Bates began Jan 7, fed by force on Jan 19. Bailey refused since Jan 15. They are isolated in separate cells under medical supervision and will be force fed if life is at risk.
Chicago January 20 AP The fate of Dr Alice Wynekoop accused of slaying her young daughter Rheta hung in the balance as prosecutors insisted the murder trial proceed despite her illness. Three court physicians find her very sick though whether trial continues depends on judge.
Washington officials defended a 23 percent rise in winter wheat seedings across 11 major states, saying it does not signal failure of the program but highlights non-cooperator farmers. They expected a 4,263,000 acre drop but saw only 2,367,000 acres less, or 77 percent of the forecast, due to non-signers seeking higher prices next year. They noted some signed contracts may still reduce spring wheat sowing to meet contract terms and future benefit payments, while steps to curb additional plantings by non-cooperators have not been decided.
Canada’s 1933 wheat crop was estimated at 269,729,000 bushels by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, down from the November estimate of 271,821,000 bushels. The revised 1932 crop figure shown is 443,061,000 bushels.
Topeka AP report on January 20 details J N Dolley former state bank commissioner testifying about a conversation with Tom B Boyd ex state treasurer charged with illegal removal of bonds from the treasury. Dolley described Boyd seeking his bond as a surety and discussing Ronald Finney amid the bogus bond scheme.
Topeka Jan 20 AP Frank J Ryan secretary of state said a meeting of the state bonus board was called to consider issuing bonds to pay soldiers bonus claims. Funds placed in Finney banks were closed amid a bogus bond investigation with an estimated loss of 200000 to 250000 dollars. The board has issued 30500000 of 32000000 authorized and may need another 500000.
White House officials say President Roosevelt wants to keep Farley as postmaster general while he continues as Democratic National Committee chairman until he resigns. Farley reportedly plans to step down but may remain under pressure over patronage. Rumors of Farley running for New York governor in 1936 are dismissed. Some suggest banning national committee chairs from cabinet and Congress, but no formal move announced as biennial elections approach.
