John Burnison, Lawrence building contractor, says he supports if it does not infringe on neighbors though yards may be damaged. Rachel Nolan, a student, would back the measure and recalls a childhood pet pig and an armadillo as a unique former pet.
The Environmental Protection Agency recognized Kansas University Hospital on Tuesday for diverting more than 540 000 pounds of solid waste from landfills through recycling, waste reduction, eco friendly purchasing and community involvement. The hospital earned the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award and used EPA s Re TRAC online reporting system to track reductions. In other police news an 18 year old Lawrence man was charged with aggravated battery following a Tuesday morning incident at his apartment. Prosecutors also filed child sex crime charges against a 38 year old Lawrence man after a preliminary hearing in central Lawrence. The judge set trial for April 4 and the suspect remains jailed on 100 000 bond. The Journal World notes it does not identify sex crime suspects unless convicted.
An electrical fire starting in an attached garage spread to a rented home on Poplar Street in Perry, causing smoke damage. Firefighters were called at 1:30 a.m. Monday. no injuries occurred as the family escaped with one cat dead and two vehicles in the garage likely a total loss. The Red Cross was notified and occupants reportedly found temporary lodging with relatives.
A rural Lawrence man was ticketed after clipping the elbow of cyclist Michelle Jensen, 36, while trying to pass a group of riders on County Road 458 southwest of Lawrence at 2 50 p m. The left elbow impact came from Ronald Wilson, 63, driving a 1987 Chevrolet pickup, who was cited for passing on the left with insufficient clearance.
Clay and Katy Britton of Lawrence welcomed a boy on Tuesday followed by James Ryant and Kathryn Cummins also of Lawrence welcoming a boy on Tuesday.
A Tuesday Public Forum letter corrected the date of a Martin Luther King Jr speech to April 3 1968, noting the earlier publication gave an incorrect date. The forum clarifies the speech timing and preserves the record of the historic event.
