Lawrence city commissioners unanimously approved adding potbellied pigs to the list of permissible pets under the animal code. The change follows resident Ehren Penix’s battle to keep his roughly 80 pound potbellied pig Starky legal in the city. Regulations require one pig per owner and veterinarian paperwork, with odor concerns and nuisance rules still applying.

Kansas tax plan blamed for hurting poor most

Gov Sam Brownback’s tax plan faces criticism as nonprofit analysis from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy finds the bottom 80 percent of Kansans would see a tax hike while the top 20 percent gain tax cuts. Critics say middle and low income families lose via reduced credits and higher sales tax. Brownback argues rate cuts, business tax relief, and eventual income tax elimination will spur growth and lure investment in Kansas.
