Les Brown remembered as last of the big band era
Calder Pickett recalls Les Brown, age 88, as a prominent but not top tier bandleader. He toured into recent years, recorded hits like Sentimental Journey with Doris Day, and accompanied Bob Hope on USO trips. Pickett notes Brown’s place in Swing era history, his Duke University ties, TV work with Steve Allen, and the shift to rock as the era ended.
