Target to rebrand Dayton's and Hudson's as Marshall Field's

Dayton's and Hudson's, once distinct Midwest department stores, merged to form Target Corp and will drop their familiar names for Marshall Field's. The plan covers 19 Dayton's stores in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and 21 Hudson's stores in Michigan, with Marshall Field's operating 24 locations in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

California Sierra Nevada forest protection plan unveiled

The U.S. Forest Service released a plan to protect 11.5 million acres across 11 national forests in the Sierra Nevada. It bans logging of old growth and large trees, shields streams and meadows, and prescribes thinning near inhabited areas to curb wildfires, safeguarding the California spotted owl and other species.

Four suspects charged in crack house killings in Philadelphia

Undercover officer shot dead by colleagues in Oakland

Officer William Wilkins, 29, an undercover OAKLAND Police Department veteran of seven years, was shot around 11 p.m. while pursuing a suspect during a drug stakeout near the San Leandro Oakland border. He died at Highland Hospital after officers arrived on scene and opened fire.
