McLouth Woman Killed When Truck Overturns in Fog
Donna M. Peine, 59, of McLouth, died early Friday after a 1993 Chevrolet pickup rolled twice and trapped her beneath it west of McLouth on Kansas Highway 16. She was not wearing a seat belt as heavy fog shrouded the area about 4 15 a.m. Three miles west of town.

Rape Robbery Conviction Yields Long Prison Term
Terry McIntyre, 40, was given 645 months nearly 54 years in prison for raping a Payless ShoeSource employee and robbing a store in Lawrence. Judge Paula Martin ordered the sentence, with no parole for more than 44 years, after McIntyre was found guilty of rape aggravated kidnapping aggravated criminal sodomy aggravated robbery and kidnapping in December. The victim’s father spoke of the impact on his daughter as McIntyre sat with his attorney during the reading of the sentence.

Judge appeals to King's legacy in Kansas observance

Attorneys fail to secure fee award in South Lawrence Trafficway case
Two Lawrence lawyers Eye and Plenk lost their bid to have the federal government cover about 45000 in legal fees for lawsuits against the eastern leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver ruled the government need not pay. Defendants included the Federal Highway Administration, Douglas County commissioners and the Kansas secretary of transportation. The suit began in 1997 after the project was halted pending a supplemental environmental impact statement. Eye and Plenk represented two environmental groups and Lawrence residents.
