Washington lawmakers pressed to define who runs Europe recovery aid. Lewis Douglas testifies as GOP leaders demand explicit limits and a single administrator or a board structure. Secretary Marshall testifies as questions focus on budget figures and administrative control.
Secretary Anderson denied that administration requests for standby rationing and price controls over meat and foods come from shipments under the Marshall plan. Senator Vandenberg questioned the plan after Anderson said the United States can meet large food shipments to Europe. The administration seeks 6.8 billion dollars for the first 15 months of the four year recovery program.
Deane Ackers of Topeka was reelected chairman of the Kansas Industrial Development Commission at the meeting in Atchison. H E Murhnic of Atchison was chosen as vice chairman. The body approved projects on advertising in relocation of industry tax effects on expansion and a chemical process grant for Kansas State College. The Kansas Wheat Improvement Association received a $3,000 grant from commission funds.
Washington Jan 13 Republicans pledged a major cut to the president's peacetime proposal. Chairman Taber said a tentative target of about five billion dollars would be examined by the Senate Farm House committee as Truman’s request for foreign aid and other programs faces scrutiny. He noted education welfare and housing outlays are among the items critics say exceed needs, while the party seeks broader tax relief and tighter spending.
An Eastern Airlines DC-3 with nine aboard crashed amid rain near the Potomac on the Maryland side while approaching Washington National Airport at about 4:27 am EST. Five were killed, four injured. experts blamed weather and darkness as rescuers faced mud and thickets. The crew, identified by Eastern, included pilot Saltanis, co-pilot Samborn, and flight attendant Philos, all from Atlanta.

The World War II carillon memorial at the University of Kansas will include a bell honoring Forrest Clare Allen Jr who died at 14.5 in 1925. His parents and siblings provided the $500 gift, joining other memorials to notable locals and sorority gifts by close of 1922. The bell is part of a broader program of specially dedicated or memorial bells in the carillon.

City council granted 34 beer retail licenses at last night’s meeting in city hall. Four applications seek nonpremise sales, while the rest request bottle or glass sales. Licenses cost 50 dollars and await inspections by police, fire, building, and sanitarian officials before issuance.

City council agreed to submit a street repair proposition to voters in the general city election. If approved, the city could issue up to about 90 thousand dollars annually in bonds for at least ten years to fund resurfacing and repairs on aging streets.

Chicago Jan 13 H R Lake president of Santa Fe Skyway Inc freight subsidiary of Santa Railway announced decision to abandon operations of Skyway in the immediate future The air arm has operated from New York to California as a contract carrier since July 1 1946 A company spokesman said the immediate future might be within 30 days The decision to cease operations was made due to an unfriendly attitude of the civil aeronautics board toward Santa Fe and other surface carriers.
Dr. Fotin Patton, director of the Westminster Foundation, will address the Red Cross dinner at Liberty Memorial High School cafeteria next Friday at 6 pm. He covered Red Cross work during wartime and will discuss its peacetime role. about 150 to 180 tickets have been mailed to Red Cross members and committee chairs.

The city council property committee called for bids on two painting projects in the Community building basement. Chairman Sam Ferguson said work includes rest rooms lower table halls walls ceiling beams and support posts in the main room. A Lawrence school board resolution asks the city council to annex 37.5 acres on the west side of Louisiana Street between Nineteenth and Twenty-First Streets for the proposed new senior high school. The move also invites annexation of nearby land deemed advisable for school protection. Superintendent E Vatay, listed among top U S superintendents, will join a Columbia University summer conference. The board approved attending, and an application to participate in a federal school lunch program was also granted. Bids for the Log Cabin and garage on the lot will be accepted until 5 pm February 10, with a 5 percent bid security.
