City plans five story building on 1.4 acre parking lot downtown
The plan would replace the city owned 1.4 acre parking lot from Ninth Street to south of Eighth Street with a five story mixed use building. It would include at least 159 covered public parking spaces plus about 200 reserved for residents and offices, three levels of parking, and either 48 apartments with 44,400 square feet of office space or 86 apartments with 12,000 square feet of office space. A 15,000 square foot grocery store space is proposed at the Ninth and Massachusetts corner, with possible other tenants. The city would explore tax increment financing to fund infrastructure, while downtown businesses react with mixed opinions. City commissioners meet Tuesday at City Hall.

Supreme Court overturns DUI acquittal in Finch case
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that a Douglas County judge erred in acquitting Paul Finch on a DUI charge after disputes over the breath test. The court said jurors should weigh Intoxilyzer reliability, and Finch cannot be retried. Judge Fairchild’s decision was overturned and the case sent back to the jury’s consideration.
