Downtown Lawrence eyes luxury five story parking lot redevelopment

Lawrence architect Paul Werner and local developer Thomas Fritzel propose a five story mixed use building on the east side of Vermont Street in downtown Lawrence. The plan would redevelop the public parking lot to include apartments offices and possibly a small grocery. City commissioners will hear the concept Tuesday evening and say whether to explore it further.

Lawrence man pleads guilty to sex abuse of two girls

A 33-year-old Lawrence man named Donald L. Brown admitted guilt on eight charges for sexually mistreating two girls at his northern Lawrence home over a two year period. He told the court he did this for his own sexual gratification and expressed remorse. The plea avoids a January 24 trial on eight counts, with each count carrying 25 years to life. his attorney noted the defendant had contemplated the decision for weeks, delaying the trial for nutrition-related reasons.

Energy focus this year to be on awareness efficiency

Lawrence residents will gain smart meters this year funded by a $19 million federal grant to Westar Energy. About 45,000 meters will be installed citywide starting in Deerfield in January and May elsewhere. The project includes online usage data, alert texts, and pilot dynamic rates. Lawrence also joins the Take Charge Challenge to conserve energy against Manhattan over nine months.
