Shiite Protests in Iraq Run High Over U.S. Backing and Attacks
United Iraqi Alliance Shiite leaders and thousands in Sadr City and Kazimiyah condemned U.S. support for Sunni Arab politicians tied to insurgents after a two day spike in violence that killed about 200 people, including 11 U.S. troops. Protesters denounced Ambassador Khalilzad and hardliners like Saleh al Mutlaq, urging the government to act and warning of potential militia reprisals. The rallies followed mass casualties from a Thursday attack and ahead of Dec. 15 election results still pending.

Pentagon study cites body armor as lifesaving in Iraq
An unreleased Pentagon analysis of 93 fatal torso wounds to Marines in Iraq from March 2003 to June 2005 found 74 were not covered by ceramic armor. The study, reviewed by the AP, notes most deaths could have been reduced with larger or better protection around the armor plate.
