Market prices for wheat corn and beans are listed with futures and cash quotes. Livestock bids show cattle hogs and sheep with ranges for grade selections amid a volatile stock market slide led by the Dow Jones drop and AP average fall.
First National City Bank of New York said its prime rate rose to 7 percent from 6 percent. The move follows other banks boosting rates earlier in December to 6 3/4 percent amid widespread expectations of higher loan costs for individuals and businesses. The Philadelphia National Bank joined the rise to 7 percent with more banks expected to follow.

At a board meeting the majority voted 3 to 2 to withhold Shaver & Co. architectural fees of 4148.63 due to dissatisfaction with work at Broken Arrow and South Junior High. Readings showed low lighting in some areas, A 13 to 45 foot candles corridor variance. Others urged payment for all other costs. The board also considered transferring Roy J Leonard’s land into the Lawrence District to admit his children tuition free, a plan previously denied by the state.
Kansas University freshman Tom Gillman reported theft of a taper player and 12 tapes from Oliver Hall during Christmas break. He said the room door was locked when he left campus but was removed and refinished while vacant.
Twenty six children aboard Monday's Freedom Flight from Cuba to Miami received dolls and toy cars. Exiles hosting the ceremony at Freedom Gate gave gifts at the port of entry, which has welcomed 135,511 Cubans aboard the flights this year.
Gov. Robert Docking will name Jess Stewart and Vincent Bogart to the Kansas Board of Regents. Stewart is a funeral director from Wamego, Bogart a Wichita attorney and former state representative. The Board will consist of five Democrats and four Republicans with a Jan. 15-16 meeting set to discuss a new KU chancellor candidate slate.
Apollo 8 Juniors Sam Kopp and Mark Vandevender spent 16 days in an eight by four by four foot plywood capsule in Sam Kopp's yard. They ate cold canned food and celebrated Christmas with families before returning to school. Sam praised partial fitness though ankles ached and both boys reported illness while the capsule was hot and leaked in rain.
Heard in Lawrence Lili Chookasian a leading contralto with the Metropolitan Opera Company will appear in concert at 8 20 p m Wednesday in Murphy Hall University Theatre as part of the KU Concert Course.
The Gaslight Gang, an eight member dixieland band from KU, will audition for three network TV shows in Hollywood. They already have a definite appearance commitment on The Andy Griffith Show and will compete in the All-American College Hour. Leader Paul Gray and trumpeter Dave Neely will lead the group leaving Lawrence January 26 and returning February 5.
Unified School District 497 board accepted federal standards for the National School Lunch Program for the current year but moved to reevaluate the policy at year end and consider ending federal participation. Supt. Knox and Asst. Supt. Voges warned that delaying guidelines could end federal reimbursement and commodities.
Ruthanne Hennessey of Lewis Hall reported the theft of a suitcase and clothing valued at 500 from the Union Pacific Railroad Station at N 2nd and Maple in Lawrence. The items included two coats two suits two dresses and other clothing. Five other thefts were reported including a tool box and contents a $150 television set a car stereo and tapes and a small cabinet from Eldridge House Club.
