Lawrence-Douglas County Health Board granted 60 days to study a sanitary sewer project east of the city after only about 46 percent of property owners signed the benefit district petition. Chair Jack Harris said the plan may be reduced to a smaller district and assured signers signing now will not bind them to the project. Opponents cited cost as the main objection.

Four Die in West Virginia Nursing Home Fire
A Martinsburg fire killed four residents of a nursing home and injured several others. Victims include Velma Stroop Smith 40 operator Minnie Pence Virginia Blake and Frank Bowers 82 who later died from burns. Others burned are Wilmer Schell 90 and Isabel Wheeler 68. Clifford Smith hospitalized for shock. Two more patients Harden and Griffith escaped hospitalization.

Noah F. La Bruyere, 60, of Route 2 died this morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a short illness. A Missouri native, he lived in Douglas County since 1957 and was a WWI veteran. Survived by his wife Mildred and eight relatives. Burial planned in National Cemetery at St. Louis.

Mother and five children die in night fire in Winstonville
In Mound Bayou Mississippi a mother Nora Smith 35 and four of her children Lux J. Smith 14 Margaret 9 Heristine 8 and Vivian 5 died when a coal heater exploded as kerosene was poured to start a fire. A grandchild Sally May Robinson 3 also perished while two other children escaped.
