Alfalfa and Soybeans in Cattle Feed Formulations
County Extension Director notes that alfalfa provides a cheap protein source while cracked soybeans offer protein without cooking unless urea is used. Avoid feeding raw soybeans to young stock, limit to 20 percent of the ration, grind fresh weekly, and replace soybean meal with raw beans at 1.2 to 1.0 ratio. Starea can substitute for protein and lowers rumen ammonia, improving microbial protein synthesis and palatability.
