Lawrence sales tax growth must hit 5.4% in 2025 to meet budget
Chad Lawhorn notes 2024 growth at 1.0 percent fell short of 2025 projections, requiring Lawrence to push spending higher in 2025 to reach a 5.4 percent sales tax rise. Historical rates show three straight declines since 2021, with 2025 excluding a $1.25 million boost from a housing tax. City may face pressure to raise property taxes or cut services for 2026.

City dredges river reach to protect water plant and events
Maali said periodic dredging of the river around the intake to remove sediment and debris prevents damage to the treatment plant and reduces pump stress. The work could close part of the river for up to two months, prompting coordination with MSU Parks, Recreation and Culture and the University of Kansas rowing program. The contractor will haul away dried sediment after dredging, with timing depending on warmer weather.
