In Topeka the Kansas Legislature faces a projected 7 to 8 million dollar budget shortfall as it opens the 1964 session on January 14. Officials expect minor bookkeeping fixes rather than major tax hikes. Mr. Anderson’s budget recommendations will guide the 30 day session.
Pope Paul VI entered the eve of his historic journey to the Holy Land. At Rome's Fiumicino Airport the four engine DC8 prepared for final flight to Amman. Jordan mobilized security forces while Jerusalem and Israeli officials arranged routes and traffic for the papal visit.
Pepsi Cola officials abandon their prior checking method and will now deposit money directly at a bank at night. Sheriff Fred Broeker reports no definite clues, though several persons will be checked. Two unrelated arrests were made of drivers using Louisiana Street as a drag strip at over 70 mph. charges expected.
President Scarborough announced Baker University’s $650,000 men’s dormitory plan received approval in Washington. The HHFA funds are reserved and Fort Worth HHFA will assist in final plans while Wilson & Company prepares drawings for the April 22 trustees meeting.

Two Kansas University freshmen from Lawrence waited on courthouse steps for license tag sales. Mike Smith and Buddy Straight surrendered tag No 1 to fellow resident Lloyd Bookwalter after waiting since Wednesday morning. They planned three tags but kept No 2 and gave No 3 to Bookwalter. Bookwalter declined No 1 to honor their long wait. A separate municipal report will be presented January 14 at 7:30 p.m. by Harland Bartholomew associates and John Cofer on Commercial Centers and Public Buildings.
Costa Rica University, a KU sister institution, is among five foreign schools to share a five year 100000 grant with American medical schools for International Centers for Medical Research and Training. The project, federally supported, links UCR with LSU in tropical medicine and includes student and faculty exchanges and administrator visits.
Auburn University registered classmen for the winter quarter as officials awaited a ruling on housing for Harold A. Franklin, a 31 year old Montgomery resident scheduled to register in the graduate school under a federal court order. Judge Frank M. Johnson Jr. considered Franklin's request for another order to provide campus housing after university officials refused him a dormitory room.
A special meeting is planned next week in Lawrence to decide how to pursue proposed improvements along the alley in the 800 block of Massachusetts. Options include petitions from 51 percent of property owners or a city commission approved plan with a public hearing. City property ownership and holiday delays complicate timely action.
The Topeka firm handles mapping, elevation marks, valley surveys, aerial printouts, and flood water depth calculations for the Wakarusa Watershed. Circuit Judge Phil H. Cook ruled Kansas City businessman Charles E. Curry not qualified to run for Missouri governor on the Democratic ticket. Curry lived briefly in Kansas and would not meet the Missouri residency requirement of ten years until December 8, 1965. The decision prevents Curry from seeking the nomination alongside Hearnes and other Democrats.
Two youths were injured Thursday in separate traffic crashes and admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Darlene Bryant 6 of Eudora was struck by Harold Taylor route 1 Eudora. Mark Ames 13 of 1417 West Street was hit by Orvil J. Tingle Jr. at 9th and Vt Streets. Both in good condition.
American film producer John Huston renounced U.S. citizenship and became an Irish citizen in Dublin. He said a person should be a citizen of the country where he lives after living in Ireland 12 years on his Galway estate with wife Ricci and children Anjelica and Walter. His father Walter Huston and great‑grandfather from Armagh are noted in the report.
Four Topeka men Sam Cohen George Emyer Jr Ralph Cohen and Alfred A Wolffgang paid in full for the former governor’s mansion west of the Statehouse and received the deed. Sold for 28500 at public auction last September the property will be replaced by 30 to 40 rental apartments at roughly 125 to 175 dollars a month.
Jack Vincent announces Don Henderson as decorator for the new two story decorating center at 708-730 Conn St. Henderson, a Independence Kansas native, brings nine years with Sayers Furniture Co. in Independence and a 1960 Chicago School of Decoration and Design graduate. The shop will offer furniture draperies carpets wallpaper paint and decorating accessories with an April 1 opening target. The Vincents and Henderson family reside at 2565 Ridge Ct. Henderson active in civic projects and former Independence Junior Chamber president.
East German officials issued 1 282 000 permits for one day visits by West Berliners to East Berlin as talks to extend the sight visits stalled. West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt and West German Vice Chancellor Erich Mende prepared for talks with East German authorities amid a holiday deadline at midnight Sunday. The ADN state news agency provided the permit count up to this morning with no clear indication of when negotiations might start or what terms would be demanded.
Patrolman Kenneth L. Harmon is promoted to detective and will work with Detective Vernon Harrell starting 4 p.m. Saturday. Carroll L. Crossfield is hired as patrolman. Harmon previously joined in 1958 and received a citation for helping capture two armed escapees. The fourth detective will be named later this month, and seven more patrolmen are planned.
