Kansas Highway Patrol started a statewide study to explain a spike in highway fatalities since Christmas. Col. Larry Hughes said the department will review deaths from Dec 24 through Jan 2, noting 42 total since Christmas and 77 in December versus 48 a year ago.

Todd Edward McMillen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny McMillen of 114 Pawnee, is Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s first baby of 1964. He arrived at 3 49 a.m. weighing 8 pounds 7.4 ounces and measuring 19 inches. The father works for the City Water Department and hopes to be a fish and game protector. Mother is a Kansas University junior.
Archbishop Makarios urged dismantling the 1960 independence treaties that guarantee Cyprus sovereignty with Britain Greece and Turkey. He aims to abrogate the guarantees amid renewed Greek Turkish clashes that killed three monks and wounded three others at a monastery near Nicosia. Britain fears Turkish Cypriot reprisals if the partners act unilaterally.

Seven adult education students at Lawrence High School earned diplomas after completing December courses. The group includes Edmond Mechavich who logged ten hours and began night study in 1955 after military service and injuries. Other graduates include Ann Falk, Melvin Spinner, Joe Transmeier, Robert Karr, Chris Carlson, and Robert Zook with credits in accounting government English literature and art related subjects. Sixty five students total took 104 hours of credit in the fall semester.

An Air Force spokesperson said a C124 carrying 22,000 pounds of cargo went down about 450 miles west of Honolulu. Eight aboard survived and the corpse of a Navy man was aboard. Reported positions varied before confirmation. Four aircraft were en route to the area, joined by two from Hickam Base.

The W. Hamer residence two miles northeast of Vinland burned today while the family was away. Firemen found the roof caving in on arrival. The Hamers work at Kansas University with children at Vinland grade school and Lawrence High. Cause and insurance status unavailable.
