Aspen bomb scare ends with suspect's suicide
A former Aspen resident left four gift wrapped bombs in two banks and a downtown alley on Wednesday prompting a mass downtown evacuation and rescheduling New Year celebrations. Police later found James Blanning dead in his Jeep, with a rifle and handgun, after he allegedly targeted Wells Fargo and Vectra Banks and warned of mass death. No injuries were reported. Blanning had criticized President Bush in notes and claimed four banks were his targets, though only two received packages. Downtown Aspen was cleared, restaurants and shops adapted as detonation squads neutralized the devices. The investigation continues to determine motive and extent of planned attacks.
