Kansas primary drive boosts registration in Douglas County

Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes will extend registration hours and operate special sites to increase primary turnout for the April 7 election. The campaign partners with the League of Women Voters and local groups to reach voters at work and home. Year round sites in Lawrence at city hall and Independence Inc. run through March 23, with courthouse hours extended to 9 p.m. on March 19 20 and 23. A first site opens at Haskell Indian Junior College on Wednesday from 11 30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Court won't stop Haitians' return

The Supreme Court refused to halt the forced repatriation of more than 15,000 Haitian refugees, an 8-1 decision leaving the Bush administration's action intact. Justice Blackmun urged full review, while Justice Thomas expressed concern but rejected the appeal, saying the political branches must handle the matter.
