Five inmates escaped from McPherson county jail about 4 a.m. after locking six others in separate cells. Navy loses World War I commander Henry Mayo
Rear Admiral Henry T Mayo aged 80 died of a heart attack at his son's home in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Mayo commanded the Atlantic fleet from 1916 to the end of American participation in the war and led inspections of ships in Europe in 1918. He represented the United States at the 1917 Allied naval conference in London. Born December 28 1856 in Burlington Vermont he retired in 1920 after a long career including Spanish American War service and time as Mare Island yard commandant. He married Carrie M Wing in 1881 and resided in Burlington after retirement.
