Brown avoids execution as Chessman stay stirs state

California Governor Edmund G. Brown halted Daryl Chessman’s execution and granted reprieves to three death row inmates. A Brown effigy appeared in Modesto, while Republican Assemblyman Bruce Reagan pursued possible impeachment amid calls to reopen capital punishment during a February 29 special session.

Weather outlook for Kansas Tuesday to Saturday shows average temperatures 5 to 10 degrees below normal in the west and up to 10 below in the east. Normal highs range from 45 in the northeast to 50 in the southwest, with lows from 18 to 28. A warmer start gives way to midweek cooling and little change afterward. Precipitation expected from .10 to .25 inches in the west and up to .50 inches in the east, as rain or snow in the southeast and rain elsewhere, ending near weekend.

Area in Georgia Revises Listing Of Negro Voters

In Liberty County Georgia the voting list was revised cutting about 1000 names from the rolls largely among Negro voters. Officials deny discrimination and say removals stem from nonparticipation under state law as letters warn inactive registrants. The county, with a Negro majority, had 2472 Negro and 2128 white registrants for the 1958 Democratic primary.

Plane spotted near Helena after four missing in blizzard

A private plane carrying Jack Flynn Sr. 36 Florence 34 Ernest McCabe 41 and Aileen 40 vanished in a sudden blizzard while en route from Great Falls to Las Vegas. A search plane sighted the wreckage near Helena with two occupants walking nearby and uncertain fates for the other two. An unconfirmed report said all four may be alive.

Ten Are Tops In 4-H Events

About 400 Douglas County 4-H members from 18 clubs competed at Central Junior High School with top blue ribbon winners advancing to regional events at Baker University. Parker to head Greater University Fund advisory board

Paul J. Parker of Bartlesville Oklahoma will be chairman of the KU Greater University Fund advisory board with Lloyd M. Kagey of Wichita as vice chairman. They take duties May 1 after being chosen at the KU spring meeting. Parker is vice president of Phillips Petroleum international division and Kagey is an attorney. The fund seeks gifts from alumni and friends and is part of KU's Endowment Association. The board heard GUF contributions may reach a record high for the year ending April 30.
