Promoters built a rare chance for Black Lawrence youth
The Promoters, a Black basketball club in Lawrence, defied odds from 1920s to 1950s, coaching by white teachers and community volunteers. Promoters faced segregation, traveled to Missouri and Kansas City for games, and championed league titles in 1936, 1938 and 1940. By 1950 the high school team integrated and the club dissolved.
