Citizens press for action on dangerous U.S. 59 road
Sharon Magee-Minor helps lead a grassroots drive after a 1995 crash on U.S. 59 claimed many lives. She and others push for short term safety fixes and oppose a four lane freeway option east of the current highway. The Franklin-Douglas Counties Coalition of Concerned Citizens formed November 14 1999 with 800 members.

White Shadow built a black basketball outlet in 1930s Lawrence
Jesse Newman Sr. credits Forrest L. Noll, the White Shadow, with enabling Liberty Memorial High School black students to play basketball in the early 1930s. Noll coached the Promoters, Lawrence’s black team, keeping the league alive and paving the way for his nephew Verner’s later team. Newman, now 88, played center for Noll’s squads in 1930 31 32, the Promoters’ league title year, noting there were no black teachers then and Noll’s effort was a godsend.
