Lawrence Authority approves 80 unit elderly housing plan

The Lawrence Housing Authority greenlit an 80 unit elderly complex at 2700 W 27th in the southwest, with HUD final approval months away. Doris Kaiser said they will seek tenants while awaiting contractors bids after HUD acts. The project includes 72 one bedroom and eight two bedroom units for residents 62 and older.

Dog bite spurs civil suit by city worker

Spencer Johnson of the city sanitation department sues Alan Hack Jr. for 10000 in damages claiming a January dog bite on the left shoulder caused pain scars medical bills and sick leave loss. It is his second dog bite claim in under a year following a July bite on the right leg.

Oklahoma couple seeks probe of highway robbery claim

An Oklahoma City couple say they were forced to buy four tires after a Kansas Turnpike stop. They allege a Kansas highway patrolman and gas station attendant pressured them at a Wellington station. Col. Jim Martin said the incident does not fit state inspection laws and will be investigated.

Hearing short on camp plan in county meeting

Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission held a brief second public hearing on the preliminary Lawrence Comprehensive Plan. Only four residents attended. hearing started late and ended before 8 pm. Rep representatives of the Environmental Improvement Council will present their report next week. hearings will continue as interest remains.

Fire damages home on Randall Avenue

An overheated skillet sparked a small fire at Karl Farris's residence 1029 Randall Wednesday evening. Firefighters found the blaze under control upon arrival, causing about 750 dollars in damage.

Nebraska panel blocks coal slurry pipeline eminent domain bill

The Public Works Committee voted 5 to 2 to kill a bill granting coal slurry pipeline firms power of eminent domain. It would block a Wyoming to Arkansas route that would cross railroad property, with railroads opposing and pipeliners seeking federal authority. The decision can be overturned only by a 30 vote majority. Princeton University notes its 1746 founding.

County funds aid rape prevention and victim plan

Douglas County Commission approved a one year project to prevent rape and aid victims. The program operated by the Douglas County Rape Victims Support Service will receive a $23,000 grant and use about $2,500 in office supplies and equipment leased from the county, with $1,385 repaid and the remainder covered by federal revenue sharing funds.
