Kansas tax bill pushes retroactive hikes amid budget move
The measure would raise just over 1 billion dollars in two years by repealing the LLC loophole and boosting income tax rates for many Kansans effective next year. It faces mixed support in the House and Senate as lawmakers pursue rescission steps to close a 320 to 350 million dollar shortfall.

Transit hub study eyed for University City links
Transit Administrator Robert Nugent said a Lawrence study will assess a central hub using the transit system data to benefit KU and Lawrence. The plan, part of the 2017 MPO work plan, weighs road networks and demographics and follows a 2012 study that rejected several locations after neighborhood opposition. A $30 million multimodal hub near KU could not secure federal funding and was abandoned. The bus operation transfer sits at Vermont Street across from the public library, with a Greyhound bus stop location under review. A commission approval is needed before starting, and any new facility would require downtown multimodal design and a parking deck. The city’s 0.55% sales tax funding transit expires in 2018, with renewal discussions likely in spring budget talks and a possible 2018 ballot measure.
