Carter Urges Cuba Restraint as Troop Drawdown Discussed

President Carter asks Cuba to pursue restraint abroad and human rights at home as a condition for closer ties. KU Presents Dames At Sea Musical Comedy Tonight

The off-Broadway musical comedy Dames At Sea will be staged on the Kansas University campus in the Big Eight Room of the Kansas Union. Performances run 8 p.m. tonight through Saturday and 2:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday in dessert theater style. Directed by Anne Abrams and Lambring Hedge KU graduate students. Hedge is choreographer for Student Union Activities and KU Residence Halls. Dames At Sea satirizes 1930s musicals.

Space Inside Outside project targets Central Junior High

The Lawrence program Space Inside Outside pilots this week at Central Junior High with a museum tour classroom presentation and teacher resources. Dale Brooking and Karen Gould oversee an 18 month, $3300 effort funded largely by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lawrence Art Guild to boost student awareness of creating personal and community space through maps, photographs, and a Mystery History Tour.

Officials plead case for bonds and higher water rates

City officials claim water bonds warrant rate increases paid by water users not taxes. Preliminary studies show a 5 percent rise for the lightest users and up to 60 percent for the heaviest, with overall 20 percent first year and near 100 percent over five years. Growth projections cited.

Proxmire Attacks Prison Escape Study as Waste

Sen William Proxmire gives his February golden fleece award to the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration for spending nearly $27000 to study why inmates want to escape. He calls it a crime and questions the value of survey driven results from prisoners. Drug council debates moving base to Eudora

Douglas County Drug Abuse Council considers shifting its operations to Eudora to survive attendance and funding pressures.
