A four hour search on the Kaw river yielded the body of 10 year old Donny Groninger. He fell from a pontoon float while playing with friends near New York elementary school. Sheriff and city police battled currents with boats and grappling hooks as night fell. Lifesaving crews, volunteers, and Salvation Army workers provided hot drinks and support. The body was recovered at 10 p.m. near the pontoon area after extended efforts and river hazards.

University of Kansas will honor Gerald Edwin Raines with a memorial fellowship in human relations.
