Alfalfa as a Cash Crop on Marginal Land
EBEN B FARLEY argues alfalfa on marginal land can yield higher returns than corn. A 20 acre case shows net income rising from 1520 dollars with corn to about 3000 dollars with alfalfa, given 5 tons per acre and hay at 50 dollars per ton plus cost differences. Sevin approved for chinch bug control in sorghum
Kansas farmers may use carbaryl Sevin to fight chinch bugs in sorghum this year after EPA approval of a limited Kansas registration. Kansas State University entomologists Leroy Brooks and Gerald Wilde cited field research showing carbaryl up to 50 times more effective than toxaphene, previously the sole registered chemical. Union Carbide sought the registration and the Kansas State Board of Agriculture approved it on July 27 1977, with labeling showing 1.5 pounds per acre in 20 to 25 pounds of water to foliage.
