Chicago AP reports FBI Director J Edgar Hoover warned that too many self styled experts in communism spread erroneous information. He urged a sane rational understanding of facts over heated rhetoric and cautioned against branding non communists as communists.
The discussion notes that 25 years ago many historians sided with Kennedy on the Mexican War but now see expansion as a trigger. Allan Nevins of San Marino cautions the dispute may never be settled while others shift from viewing the war as wrong to accepting its historical causes. The war led to U.S. control of Texas lands and present day Arizona New Mexico California Nevada Utah and part of Colorado, with Mexico receiving $15 million.
Four year old Judy Black of Kansas City Kansas, granddaughter of Mr and Mrs M F Y Black Sr of Topeka, is reported in good condition after open heart surgery Thursday. Parents are Dale and Judy Black. Lawrence residents and EU fraternity members offered blood for the operation, which required about 30 pints.
KANSAS CITY AP Joseph T. McGuff today was named associate sports editor of the Kansas City Star. McGuff, on the sports staff since 1948, will cover baseball and take on administrative duties under Ernest Mehl. Robert J. Busby, the former post holder, is on leave due to illness and hospitalized. Bill Sims and Dick Wade were named assistants in charge for the afternoon and morning editions respectively.
R R Zurbuchen of Lawrence will head Central Nitrogen Inc a $20 million ammonia and fertilizer plant planned for Terre Haute Indiana The facility to be built on a 208 acre site four miles north of Terre Haute will begin operations in fall 1963 and create about 245 local jobs Zurbuchen also runs Cooperative Farm Chemicals Assn plants in Hastings Nebraska and Lawrence Kansas and will oversee construction and operation of the Terre Haute plant The site was chosen for proximity to the Illinois Indiana and Ohio trade area abundant water and reliable natural gas supplies
Lawrence Chief Bill Cox announced the hiring of Lloyd F E Davies and James L Haller as police officers on six month probation. Both men will train with the Traffic Division and receive extensive internal training as the department moves toward full strength. Davies 23, married with a son. Haller 21, married with a daughter. Davies born in Peabody Kansas. Haller born in Lawrence. Homes listed at 1121 Ohio St and 523 La St. City Commission approved adding two officers at once.
Jerry Kazmaier a junior at Eudora High School was named a delegate to the 1962 Sun flower Boys State at Wichita West High School June 3 9 He is likely the first Eudora youth to attend He is son of Mr and Mrs John Kazmaier of Eudora A varsity athlete class leader and active in church bands and choirs Boys State sponsored by the American Legion gathers outstanding Kansas juniors for a week long simulated state and local government exercise now in its 26th year.
First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy plans a 17 day visit to India visiting seven cities from New Delhi north to Mysore and five days in Pakistan visiting Karachi and Rawalpindi. She travels with sister Princess Lee Radziwill and is hosted by Prime Minister Nehru and President Ayub Khan.
Human affairs leader Michael Freed of Denver and Rafer Johnson of Los Angeles will speak at 6 30 p m Thursday Feb 22 in the Kansas University Union ballroom. Johnson, 1960 Olympic decathlon champion, will discuss the People to People program.
Richard Roda, Jim Henderson, John Dempsey, and Dick Morris, all KU graduate or senior students, form Educational Enterprises to market a reusable manual teaching machine. They designed the device to present one question at a time and record answers on a tape roll, using pressed board and plywood. The product targets self study, language learning, and parental education needs.
A dedication and open house for the new Lecompton grade school will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. The public is welcome. J. T. Patterson, grade school principal, is in charge of the program arrangements.
United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and his wife Ethel diverted their Bali to Bandung flight after cloud cover grounded the Soviet built Ilyushin 14. An unscheduled stop occurred at Semarang, 225 miles from Bandung, while other aircraft carried journalists to Bandung. The Balinese entertained the Kennedys with ceremonies and dances during their whirlwind tour.
Former President Eisenhower says Khrushchev would like war avoided but on his own terms. He notes Khrushchev’s influence over Russian public opinion and his family image. Eisenhower also comments on segregation, supporting the Supreme Court ruling.

The one day session aims to set up a two week Costa Rica survey by a Peace Corps representative and Gale later this month. If approved Gale would become field director of the Costa Rica program.
