Roland Goss of Dallas took military duties to Bainbridge Maryland where his wife and daughter joined him. The child Janice began to say her prayers but stopped saying she forgot to tell Jesus they were leaving Texas.
In Vinita Oklahoma a well to do Craig County couple Mr and Mrs John McCord both in their 30s killed themselves after setting fire to about nine buildings on their farm 11 miles NW of Welch Their bodies were found in a garden 100 yards from their burned four room home with a pistol between them They left notes and six letters to friends relatives and a Chetohap Kas funeral home grieving over the deaths of a son and daughter in a Kansas highway crash The sheriff estimated farm machinery destroyed plus shed and garage at about $10000
Joe Switzer, a remarkable athlete from Nicodemus, earned the Brotherhood Award at the East West Shrine banquet. He stood out as the only Black player on the West, praised as a gentleman, fierce competitor, and top on-field player. Lawrence officials, including Mayor Chris Kraft, hosted the event with remarks from Gov. Arn and reflections by Rev. Pearle on brotherhood, equality, and anti discrimination.

John P Griesser of 1100 Ind. Sr. was fined 100 dollars in police court for driving under the influence. A 60 day suspended sentence was imposed and his license was suspended. He posted 250 dollars bond pending appeal to the District Court.
Marilyn Monroe arrived in Korea in combat fatigues and boots for a four day tour, meeting cheering Marines before changing into a purple dress thought suited for a cocktail party. She noted a large turnout and joked about her husband Joe DiMaggio staying in Japan.
Prof. Carroll D. Clark head of KU sociology spoke at a farmer labor management conference in Kansas City. The all day event at Sheffield Steel plant included 38 farmers 60 steel plant workers and plant managers with KU Extension backing. A Faculty Follies Orchestra performed and attendees included Deal Six Will Hayden Hugh Boyce Wilson Counts Herve Hoskinson and Omar Browning.
Rainfall totaling .93 inch doused the area, ending a dry spell since January 25. Officials reported minimal service interruptions with only wet cables causing isolated issues. Temperatures fell from 61 at midafternoon to a low of 32 by 8 this morning as rain moved through.
Approximately 1,000 delinquent tax warrants were turned over to the sheriff for collection of unpaid personal property taxes in Douglas County. County Treasurer Minnie Eudaly said all personal property taxes with unpaid first halves must now be paid at the sheriff's office. The total due includes the full tax amount plus 10 percent interest and a 50 cent collection fee. First half payments were due December 20, 1953.
President Eisenhower was presented a cap pen and gold card confirming membership in VFW Post 3279 at Abilene Kansas. Wayne E Richards of Arkansas City delivered the gift for the national and state leaders attending their annual meeting. He recalled his August 1952 VEW address and joked about carrying the card in his wallet when he returns to Abilene.
A Lawrence couple received treatment at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a traffic accident at Keighth and Rim Streets. Fred Ho Dunham of 704 Locust Street and his wife June Louise Dunham were treated for cuts and released. Police said Dunham’s car skidded on mud and went into a ditch. vehicle damage was slight.
A Senate armed forces subcommittee approved an Air Force plan to acquire 528 acres of farmland near Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka Kansas. The Air Force says current base land lacks space for longer jet recon runways and estimates 257000 dollars for the land plus 100000 for rail spur relocations and 50000 for moving utilities and roads.
Senator Ferguson of Michigan voiced optimism after a secret briefing by Adm. Radford and Undersecretary Smith, saying the fight against Communist forces in Indochina is advancing more than press reports indicate. He cautioned that the press may lack full information.
Roy A Porterfield 66 of Los Gatos Calif former Lawrence and Holton resident died Saturday. Funeral services held there this afternoon. He was KU engineering graduate 1911 with advanced degrees 1913 and 1916. Survived by wife Ann Porterfield two sisters and a brother. Henry Haug dies. burial in El Cerrito tomorrow. Herbert Bullene former Lawrence resident died in Whittier Calif. surviving wife and two sons.
Douglas County will begin its first community enrollment for Blue Cross Blue Shield since March 1952 on Thursday. Annual enrollments will be held each February in participating Kansas counties. Those who do not enroll within 10 days lose a community option until February 1955. Blue Cross is run by the Kansas Hospital Association and Blue Shield by the Kansas Medical Society, both funded by member payments to defray hospital and physician bills.
Wes Santee's 4:04.9 indoor mile was showcased on Dave Garroway's Today on Channel 4 with early news reels from New York. The film captured Santee on the Michigan State indoor track in Ann Arbor finishing strong and waving to the crowd after leading the field. Chuck Mather, Kansas University's new football coach, will be honored at a Memorial Union banquet on Thursday Feb 25, the first of its kind in school history.
In traffic court six persons were convicted of violations. George Allie Byrd of 1933 Tenn. St. received a 100 dollar fine with 15 paid and 85 suspended plus six months probation for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. Fred Kloepper of 649 W. 23rd St. was fined 10 dollars for speeding. Eugene Blaylock of 1107 W. 6th St. paid 30 dollars for speeding. Joseph Patrick Frawley of Hubbardsville N.Y. paid 10 dollars bond forfeiture for a stop sign violation. Leon Nelson Flint of 1603 La. St. was fined 50 dollars with 15 paid and 235 suspended plus six months probation for reckless driving. Amit Ablah of 1308 Vt. St. received a 25 dollar fine with 10 paid and 15 suspended plus six months probation for driving an overloaded passenger vehicle.
Probate Court records show licenses issued to Charles C. Rogers 21 of San Benito Texas and Phyllis Jean Dyer 18 of Topeka. Also listed are Sam V. Kunkle 34 of St. Joseph and Wandalee Kennon 19 of Lawrence. Jack Morelock 25 of Houston and Alice B. Finley 21 of University City Missouri.
Lawrence fire department responded to an alarm at 144 p.m. at the Nks Club located at 725 Vr. St. Fire Chief John Miller said a grease buildup in a stove began burning but the incident caused no damage and no injuries.
The Lawrence Parent-Teachers Association Coun cil opens tonight at 7 in Liberty Memorial High School auditorium. Directed by Robert Ridgeway the sessions offer parents a consultant for child raising issues. First talks focus on is Adolescence an Age of Conflict.
Witliam Pas Wilson of Chicago was fined $15 today in police court on a charge of drunkenness.
Markets on News reports broad weakness in grains with cotton and wheat soft while corn and oats show rain dampened demand. Hog and cattle futures edge higher on tight supplies, with cattle steers and heifers steady and hogs up 25 to 50 cents. Kansas City produce lists varied egg and poultry prices, butter at grade A levels, and miscellaneous meat values amid current receipts.

Sam Teague of Topeka pleaded guilty in County Court to driving while intoxicated. He was fined 100 dollars and paroled from a 30 day jail sentence.
Merle Lester Colman of Route 1 was fined $25 and costs in County Court for transporting an open bottle of liquor.

In loving memory of our son and brother Donald Donnie Groninger who left us Feb 16, 1950. He went away at a tender age and time has not healed our sorrow. Sadly missed by mother, father, sisters and brothers.
