Escaped Mental Patient Stymies Cops at Bridge
A half naked mental patient armed with an iron pipe stood off police for 24 hours on the understructure of a bridge over the icy East River. A police officer used a wooden pole to disarm him and he was captured. Elijah Smith, 35, a former factory worker, had escaped from attendants at a state hospital on Wards Island and climbed onto the bridge understructure at Little Hell Gate.

First Monorail Opens Pilot Line in Houston
