U S B52 bombers carpeted missions spanning 28 to 75 miles from Saigon, dropping nearly 5 000 bombs. Over 1 200 tons hit base camps and troop concentrations in the Saigon corridor as Tet neared.
A winter storm moving from New Mexico into Kansas is forecast to bring one to three inches of snow in the Lawrence area and two to four inches elsewhere. Ice and freezing rain trigger travel warnings as reports of skidding cars rise in Emporia. The system should end by Saturday noon with temperatures in the 30s and 80 percent tonight, 40 percent Saturday. Power outages and road closures slash Southwest Kansas as Dodge City reports up to two inches of snow atop freezing rain. utility lines iced over and two substations burned. Officials urge staying off roads until Saturday afternoon.
The Senate Transportation and Utilities Committee approved the Republican plan for faster highway construction with a unanimous vote to recommend passage. The bill, vetoed in 1968 by Gov. Robert Docking, includes raising the gasoline tax from five to seven cents per gallon, a key objection of Docking.
A proposal to issue 300 million dollars in bonds over ten years for highway construction passed by voice vote with no opposition and moves to the Senate floor. The bill was amended to place program administration with the State Highway Commission and to authorize freeway construction only, with route specifics to be decided later.

Rodger C. Johnson 44, administrator of Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 10 years, resigns effective June 1 to take an administrative post at General Rose Memorial Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He plans to stay in Lawrence until June to oversee a 42 bed extended care facility and help orient his successor. Johnson and his wife Marcia live with their four children at 1002 Avalon.

Israeli jets struck a suspected Arab guerrilla pocket inside Jordan at the Qatef outpost south of the Sea of Galilee. Ground troops backed the 25 minute air assault with border firing. Jordan said two jet strikes occurred, one 30 minutes long and another later an hour after. Napalm was dropped, with no Jordanian losses reported. An Israeli patrol in Hebron faced light fire and returned it.
Sixteen Kansas University seniors earned Woodrow Wilson designations the fifth largest total in the nation and the largest among Midwest schools. The program honors top scholars for graduate study in 1969-70 with 11,704 nominees and 1,106 designees from 349 colleges. KU’s honorees include Elizabeth Atkinson, David Allen, Jim Berryman, Daniel Foucheaux, Joe Goering, Louis Green, Donald Hedrick, David Hill, William Homer, Ruth Kolarik, Gary McClelland, Michael McDonald, Marcia McMullen, Jean Saindon, Douglas Taylor, and Jean Valk, with four honorable mentions listed.
