Casualties Rise as Viet Cong Cease-Fire Nears

U S and South Vietnamese losses in two northwest Saigon battles totaled 7 dead and 15 wounded, with 131 North Vietnamese killed. U S helicopter crews faced heavy fire. one helicopter downed and another damaged. The North Vietnamese retreated toward a base near the Cambodian border, with 64 enemy bodies counted after strikes.

Five Tulsa Runaways Picked Up in City

Five juvenile runaways from Tulsa, Ohio, were picked up in Lawrence by police after a resident reported a car parked with no gas in a restricted area. Three were held at the station, two later were found, and authorities kept them until parents could be contacted. The car was towed. Police also logged three thefts and one vandalism incident.

Lawrence election questions sent to 20 candidates by league

The Lawrence League of Women Voters mailed certified questionnaires Wednesday to the 10 City Commission candidates and 10 Unified School District 497 board candidates. Twelve finalists answered by March 20, with results printed in the Journal-World the week of March 24. The general election is set for early April.

Watershed districts face levy cap debate risk to funds

City Firms to Receive Sign Ordinance Letters

More than 300 firms and property owners in Douglas County will receive registered notices next week citing illegal or nonconforming signs. Judge excludes hypnosis testimony in Shaw Kennedy case

In New Orleans the judge barred Dr. Esmond Fatter from testifying about hypnotic sessions with Perry Russo used to recall a 1963 party at Ferrie’s apartment. The ruling found the hypnotism evidence irrelevant to the Kennedy assassination trial of Clay Shaw, who is charged with conspiring with Oswald and Ferrie.

City Police Run Short Cars As Repairs Continue

Two of the city's four patrol cars are out of service for repairs with one undergoing major overhaul and the other in routine maintenance. An extra backup car covers one district while the other is policed by an adjoining district's vehicle. New 1969 model cars were expected within two weeks to replace the broken units, delayed by a manufacturing strike.

Lawrence police report. Damage to Skinner's car estimated at 475 dollars and to Ott's at 350 dollars.

Ike's Son John May Get Post As Ambassador

John D. Eisenhower, son of the former president, is expected to be named ambassador to Belgium. The nomination reportedly has been in the works for a month and may be announced on or before President Nixon’s arrival in Brussels. Eisenhower, 46, a retired Army colonel who wrote a World War II book about Belgium, would become the first official government post since serving as White House military assistant.

Voters Registered for March 4 Lawrence Elections

City officials report 15020 residents registered for the March 4 primary for Lawrence City Commission and Unified District No 497 school board. Registration compares with 14858 last August and 17844 for the November general election. Nearly 3000 did not vote, and 126 registered since last November. Registration books open March 5 at City Hall for the April 1 general election.
