Registrants examined two weeks ago must appear again under new less rigid rules. Exams start at 10 a.m. with Dr. Ed Phillips applying the revised guidelines. Those exempted for various defects will be re examined, along with those deemed fit for limited service.
Vernon King impressed Grant township C P A members with strength lifting six sacks of cement during an initiation of two candidates McKee and King. Rev Frank Jennings and Supt R A Kent gave patriotic talks on Why We Are At War and How Are We To Get Out. Hooverized lunch by Henry Corder followed, service flag shown, and lodge agreed to two annual meetings in Lawrence with Commercial Club rooms offered free.
Dr Mark Beach of Clinton is seriously ill with pneumonia at Camp Doniphan and not expected to live. His wife and two children left for the camp after receiving a telegram last Tuesday. Beach was moved from Camp Funsten to Camp Doniphan three weeks ago and had visited his family then in good health.
A house two miles northwest of Lone Star owned by Clarence Kincaid burned to the ground yesterday afternoon. The Kincaids were in Lawrence and returned about 7:30 to find the blaze with nothing saved except a few minor furnishings. No explanation for the fire is available.
The municipal woodyard, one of the busiest city spots recently, has more than eighty cords on hand as workers keep sawing. Commissioner Cleland announced at noon today that the wood supply remains ready to meet the approaching Canadian cold snap expected to hit Kansas today or tomorrow.
A load belonging to Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Day caught fire while being moved to Perry east of Lawrence. The truck burned about a half mile east of Midland between 1 and 2 pm, destroying all contents including a piano. No cause is given.
Sir Cecil Arthur Spring-Rice former British ambassador to the United States died suddenly of heart disease at the Governor’s house in Ottawa on February 14. Born in 1859 he served in Washington from 1913 to the Allied blockade negotiations and earlier held posts in Brussels Tokyo and Persia. He became ambassador here after serving as Sweden minister and diplomat for decades.
A Kansas effort advances to build a hard surfaced fort to fort road from Leavenworth to Fort Riley via Lawrence. Manhattan hosts three meetings with J Frank Smith of the Kansas Good Roads Association invited to speak. Petitions will be signed by property owners along the route as Westmoreland in March plans a similar drive from St Marys to Manhattan.
The Y M C A at the University of Kansas gains student approval for a mobilization campaign to enroll students in Bible study classes. A convocation at Robinson Gymnasium Friday afternoon will feature Dr FE J Kulp on Christianity and World Democracy, with Hugo Wedell outlining the plan. Faculty members and volunteers will organize Bible study enrollment across campus amid sororities and fraternities already forming classes. Chancellor Frank Strong will address the study of Christianity.
Fire crews were called at 1 05 this morning to a Union Pacific box car loaded with alfalfa near Lawrence. The car had caught fire before reaching Lawrence on an arriving freight train. Cause unknown. Little alfalfa was damaged, mostly scorched.
Topeka bishop James Wise will lead Episcopal services this Sunday at 11 o clock. He is recognized as one of the state’s best orators.
A vivid plea from Constantinople relayed via Switzerland on February 4 1918 reports severe famine in Western Asia. It calls for funds to procure grain and relief supplies for Armenian Syrian refugee camps and orphanages amid Gaza destruction and growing child hunger in Lebanon and Asia Minor.
Women at Kansas State Agricultural College organize a Red Cross army to aid the spring drive in France with surgical dressings for the Allies. Students split into companies led by a captain and three lieutenants. Joel Gorst escorted to the state hospital in Topeka by Undersheriff George Schultz.
World heavyweight champion Jess Willard indicated he is pursuing a farm near Lawrence after a Kansas City visit. He hinted at a purchase but did not confirm specifics, saying only he would buy if it materializes. Willard plans to fight again by next summer and will travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for a show after brief rest.
Members of the First Christian Church are urged to attend a special meeting at 6 30 this evening with supper in the dining room. Dr E E Violette of Kansas City and State Secretary Lyons of Topeka will speak. The group will discuss hiring a second minister and summer plans while urging renewed effort after cold weather. Max Miller travelled to Kansas City today for the automobile show.

A city wide thrift drive engages schools in a contest to boost stamp and baby bond ownership among students. Prizes go to top three buildings. results based on four equally weighted factors including percent of pupils owning thrift cards and increases in stamps and bonds since February. Speakers from banks and schools will visit multiple campuses on specified February dates.
W S Burnett Santa Fe agent arranged humane relief for Ellis a smallpox patient found in a vacant room near the station. He provided a cot supplies a table chair blankets and other necessities and had meals arranged though the road did not assume responsibility. A box car with a stove and fuel was set up at an isolated spot where Ellis will stay until cured.
Mrs. Sarah A Jewett longtime Douglas County resident died Wednesday morning at her Kansas City home after a two week illness. Funeral Friday at 2 30 p m in the Congregational church parish house conducted by Rev R W Sanderson. Interment Oak Hill beside her husband Samuel Jewett. She was mother of C Jewett of District No 6. Lieut D R Durge visiting here from Ft Worth Texas after completing flying tests awaits departure for France soon to rejoin camp.
A Zabud Council No 4 Topeka Masonic team of twenty six assisted in conferring degrees on twenty two local candidates in Lawrence. After dinner talks praised the visit as one of the largest from Topeka and noted officers and participants, with a list of the degree candidates.
A group of thirty medical students, twenty five men and five women, transferred from the University of Kansas to the Roseadale Medical School last week. The new class is the largest in the school’s history, with about 150 medical students and roughly 75 pre medical students locally. Facilities are strained, and government service calls may place students in hospital fieldwork this summer to aid in training for wartime service.
University of Kansas war service study disrupts departments as history classes fall from 28 to 14 and sculpture from 40 to 14 this semester. Many students are women, and most women are engaged in war work at the university.
Tling Strode, arrested for drunkenness and disturbing the peace last night, was at the wood yard sawing wool within fifteen minutes after being sentenced by the police judge this morning. He was fined 6.50 and costs on each charge and sentenced to ten days on each charge. Charles Nobel, who was sentenced to ten days on drunkenness last Monday, made a getaway yesterday.
Miss Hazel Pratt announced that the University of Kansas will hold a women’s swimming meet in the latter part of March. More KU women are trying out for the meet than ever before. Class team captains will be chosen for the meet, which will be held between the classes.
