Coast Guard Rescuers Die In Rough Seas Off Washington
A Coast Guard rescue boat capsized near the Quillayute River mouth in the Pacific, killing three crew members while a fourth crewman and the sailboat occupants survived. Lt. Martha LaGuardia called the loss deeply sad as the 44-foot steel-hull vessel, part of a two-boat effort, faced 25-foot waves and gusty winds. The crew wore gear to stay warm and afloat during the rescue attempt.
