Minor grain dust blast at co op elevator injures one

A 2:11 PM explosion at the Farmers Co op south elevator on Moodie Road caused extensive damage and flung a metal door 30 feet. Allen Hines, 43, suffered a fractured arm and was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Cromwell Construction workers escaped down exterior ladders. Cleanup may take 30 days.

House sends death penalty bill to Senate

The Kansas House approved a death penalty bill 70 to 55 and sent it to the Senate. Supporters had a comfortable margin, while opponents predicted a narrow approval. The measure would require two trials to determine guilt and then impose the death sentence if convicted.

A morning vote approved a bill making death by injection a possible penalty for certain murders including premeditated, unintentional killings during kidnapping or sexual violence, deaths of judges and officers, and inmate killings. Area lawmakers voting yes were Walker Hendrix and Joann Flower. voting no were Forrest Swall, Barbara Ballard, and Betty Jo Chariton.

Right to compete tests with USOC, committee says

The U S Olympic Committee argues that Olympic participation is a privilege not a right and asks Oregon court to dismiss Tonya Harding's 25 million lawsuit. Harding seeks damages and a court order to halt a USOC hearing in Norway that could ban her from the Games over the Jan 6 incident. A judge was to hear the request this afternoon as the USOC notes the burden of preparing 154 athletes for the Olympics.

Illness costs Lawrence school district substitute pay rise

The Lawrence school district faces growing illness related absences that drive substitute costs to about $1,475 daily in December and total roughly $455,850 budgeted for this year. Absences peak in December with 21.7 teachers lost per day, falling to 7.7 in January as illnesses ease.
