The New Jersey resumed bombardment after a month off the line, firing 1900 pound shells for four hours at North Vietnamese fortifications south of Da Nang and killing at least five enemy soldiers. A helicopter was shot down near Pleiku with no casualties.
Hanoi adviser Le Duc Tho departs Paris with planned stops in Moscow and Peking as U S negotiators weigh progress and leverage in the Hanoi Paris talks. His prior returns coincided with lulls in Viet Cong action and secret diplomacy, fueling speculation of new developments.
John Strandmark reports a $70 stereo stolen from his car parked at 19th Street and Naismith Drive between 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday. James Pattison reports a battery stolen from his car on the weekend in the 1600 block of West 4th Street. Bill Smith reports two locks broken at a construction site in the 900 block of North H Street with $8 damage and torn telephone wires from a utility pole.

Four candidates filed for three Linwood Basehor Unified School District 458 posts. Wayne Trail seeks post No 5 in Basehor. James Barnett challenges Howard Jones for post No 6 in Linwood while Eugene Poggemeyer runs unopposed for post No 4 in Basehor.
Ernest E. Angino, 36, associate professor of civil engineering at Kansas University, filed as a candidate for the Lawrence City Commission. He advocates better city university relations, alternative tax sources, and stronger cooperation among city county and school board. Angino has taught at KU, worked for Western Geophysical and Geophysical Service, and led geochemistry efforts in the State Geological Survey. He and wife Margaret have two daughters and are St. John's Church members. He holds a mining engineering degree from Lehigh and geochemistry degrees from Kansas.
Danny Lee Mumford, 18, of 429 Ind. St., was moved to the Topeka reception center after a district court jury convicted him of felonious assault on Lawrence officer Larry Loveland on January 21. He received a one to three year sentence at Hutchinson’s Industrial Reformatory, verdict reached January 9.
A northbound car left U S 59 at 3 05 p m injuring its driver, 21 year old Russell Craycraft of 1632 E Glenn Jr He was unconscious overnight and in fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital He skidded about 275 feet into a stream and said he passed another car before losing control Two other crashes near Lawrence sent Michael S Charles 18 and Connie J George 23 to minor injuries when Charles car ran off K 32 U S 24 40 and struck a field damaging the vehicle and a fence.
