Jordan said it fought a seven hour artillery duel with Israel in the Ghor Safi area south of the Dead Sea. A spokesman in Amman accused Israel of starting the exchange. Israel offered no immediate comment.
Memorial service set for Albert S. Palmerlee 61 of 1344 Strong Ave a KU engineering teacher who died at home likely of a heart attack. He served KU 30 years and was co author of The Geometry of Engineering Drawing. Survivors include wife and three sons. Memorial gifts to KU Endowment Memorial Loan Fund. cremation performed no burial.
A pre enrollment meeting for parents of next year's South eight and ninth graders is set for 7 30 tonight in the Central Junior High auditorium. Douglas County plans a 5 percent cost of living salary increase for most county employees effective Feb 1.
Paris reports say prisoner exchanges are the most likely initial topic at secret Vietnam peace talks if they occur. Western observers note talks have stalled over political future vs military de escalation. North Vietnam holds hundreds of American airmen. Viet Cong hold a few dozen in jungle camps. Saigon holds thousands of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong suspects. North Vietnam has refused to list prisoners or allow Red Cross access.
South Vietnamese marines uncovered fifty 240mm rockets with large warheads in War Zone C, 60 miles north of Saigon near the Cambodian border. Officials say improvised warheads and bicycles were used for transport, with range estimates of one to four miles and total explosive power around 5 000 pounds. The find aims to blunt any attack on Saigon during the lunar new year period.
Dolph Simons Jr., Journal World publisher, was re elected president of the William Allen White Foundation Trustees at the Kansas Union annual meeting. Officers re elected include Stanley Stauffer David H Clymer Drew McLaughlin Jr Keith L Nitcher and Warren K Agee. The foundation will study spring birthday events and potential medallion and prize ideas while expanding journalism programs and fundraising.

Cletus Grosdidier a 32 year old Eudora dairy farmer was named Kansas Outstanding Young Farmer by the Kansas Jaycees at the Abilene convention. He received a 200 dollar bond a plaque and a trip to the national contest in St Paul Minn with his wife Mary Eileen. He operates a 640 acre dairy and a 140 head Hereford operation and has led in modern barn and milking parlor design and a self propelled feeding system. He has served as 4 H leader Lions Club board of rural water district and library board. Runners up were Dale Keesecker and Larry Womacks.
Three people remain hospitalized after weekend accidents. Mrs. Carol Brune and Mrs. Sharon Hamer suffered serious injuries, while Mrs. Hamer's husband Joe Hamer has a shoulder injury. Incidents included a turnpike crash, a two-vehicle collision on 9th Street, and a driveway collision near 23rd Street. Minor injuries were reported for several others. Damages ranged from several hundred to a few thousand dollars. A separate hit-and-run damaged a parked car over the weekend.
Michel Colin, a 63 year old French former priest who calls himself Pope Clement XV, has founded The New Church of Christ in a drafty Milan three-room apartment. He claims Christ instructed him to become priest bishop and pope, and he appears with two cardinals wearing purple robes and an ermine cape.

Dean Fred, 19, of Haskell Institute, was released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after head injuries from a fall at Grant's Tavern. Witnesses said he struck his head on pavement after slipping from back stairs around 5:40 p.m. Saturday. Police report five thefts and four vandalism incidents including multiple car and property thefts.
