Independence Kansas City inquest into Col Thomas H Swope death ends with a verdict that strychnine caused the philanthropist’s death but the jury cannot decide whether felonious intent existed. Dr B C Hyde and others faced testimony and adjournment debates as the coroner’s jury deliberated.
The board of education acted firmly after protests about high school discipline and a defiance of the law. Announcement of The Palette club formed at the University for women in art. Officers elected include Miss Fery Edie president Mrs Fisher secretary and Miss Mame Myer treasurer. Members will wear palette shaped pins and study Famous Artists with art focused tasks.
The Bell company facing a new city ordinance would pay roughly 749.80 every six months in Lawrence. The tax charges 30 cents per pole and per 100 feet of underground conduit, with 1664 poles and about 2600 feet of conduits. The ordinance also mentions 2 percent of gross receipts, and notes additional assets including wires instruments and real estate valued at about 700.
Topeka February 9 Former United States Senator Chester L Long questioned a Republican governor race saying there may be no candidate. Governor W B Stubbs challenged Long to enter the race, accusing the old machine faction, who backed Speaker J G Cannon on Kansas Day. Also noted are local ads and notices including ice cream flavors, a court finding Henderson not guilty, and other small items.
The Lawrence Board of Education unanimously suspended nineteen Lawrence High School students for violating board rules and Kansas law by belonging to fraternities Delta Omicron Omicron and Phi Sigma Chi. The suspension, described as indefinite, requires the boys to disband their fraternities and vow not to rejoin during schooling. reinstatement terms were not set.
Mrs Stuckey attempts to raise bond for her husband Rev Wallace M Stuckey pastor editor of Williamsburgh to secure his release from Ottawa county jail Kansas. She traveled from Williamsburg to Ottawa seeking support and planned to stay involved until bond is posted.
Colorado will urge the legislature to appropriate funds to take over the U S Indian schools at Fort Lewis and Grand Junction. A $40 000 state appropriation for each school is proposed as the US government plans to transfer control due to declining pupil numbers. The baggage, mail, smoking and chair cars tumbled into a ravine while the engine and tender avoided the fall. A relief train was dispatched, with at least one baggageman in critical condition among the injured.
