Jury rejects suit on safety of low tar Carltons
A jury ruled against the family of Martin Little in a 1998 lawsuit claiming that Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp Carltons were no safer than regular cigarettes. Little died of lung cancer in 1999 at age 54 after early attempts to quit. The trial lasted four hours and sought $970,000 for medical costs and lost earnings. In a separate case, three California State University Chico fraternity members received 30-day jail terms for furnishing alcohol to a minor who died after a party. Bran don Bettar and Richard DeLuna and Sam Dob byn, all 21, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor. Heideman, 18, a Pi Kappa Phi freshman, died after attempting to drink brandy. A fraternity lawyer said a tape of a 911 call will be circulated among its 140 chapters.

Nation's plumbing crisis could cost trillions, lawmakers warn
Washington officials say replacing pipes and upgrading plants may total up to 1 trillion dollars over two decades. Senator George Voinovich introduced a bill to boost EPA funding to states for wastewater projects. EPA studies echo a 1 trillion dollar need by 2020 with a potential 6 percent annual bill rise for customers if costs are borne by ratepayers. The pace strains Rust Belt cities with aging systems and shrinking tax bases.

Cell phones show no clear cancer risk in large Danish study
A study of 420,000 Danish cell phone users finds no evidence that mobile devices raise brain or nervous system cancer risk. Researchers say the findings, while reassuring, do not settle the debate, as long-term exposure and earlier small studies keep questions alive. Authoritative figures urge careful interpretation and continued monitoring.
