Kansas House split over coal plant compromise near Holcomb
House Speaker Melvin Neufeld says both planned 700 megawatt coal plants near Holcomb must be built, accusing Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of bad faith by offering to allow one plant. Sebelius maintains the offer was in good faith and economically feasible, arguing a single plant can meet western Kansas needs and lower costs. The dispute unfolds as committees consider measures reversing a prior rejection and imposing CO2 rules, with Sunflower Electric and Tri-State/Golden Spread tied to proposed financing and development fees.
