The U S government fines six major electrical firms for trust violations. Wide snow coverage disrupts travel from Texas to New England, with record severity in parts of New York and Cortland New York. Transport and utilities scramble to restore service as storms drift northeast.
Philadelphia report says six large electrical companies including General Electric and Westinghouse faced $150000 in fines and 30 day jail terms for price fixing and bid rigging in a wide antitrust case. The court sentenced two vice presidents and fined the firms on multiple counts.
Moscow offered no public update on the seven ton Sputnik mission with Western observers split over whether it failed or remains unmanned. Prof Yevgeny Klinov said the craft was designed to study Earth while experts debated transmission and tracking signals from several nations.
The Lawrence City Commission will meet Tuesday afternoon to review an insurance policy for city property, a temporary sanitary sewer lift station for the Southridge area, reconsider land vacation requests on the west side of Second Street, and bid openings for tires for city vehicles with bids due at 10 a.m. for evaluation.

The incident drew praise for U S Air Force and Navy cooperation and Brazil and Portugal gratitude for cooperation in the seizure response.
HAVANA AP The Cuban government seized the Yateras Aqueduct Co which supplies Guantanamo Bay water since 1939. Antonio Batista said operations would continue as before and no disruption to the base’s supply occurred. The 20 year contract was renewed to 1969.
Spring semester enrollment at the University of Kansas rose 8.3 percent to 8,502 on the Lawrence campus and 688 at the Medical Center in Kansas City. Total KU spring figures set records, weather brings snow, and women’s share rises with 417 more women on campus.
The Lawrence unit Combat Support Co. of the 137th Infantry received a superior rating from Fifth Army for its annual inspection on December 14 at the Community Building Armory. Commanded by Capt. Karl Reber, the 100-strong unit is part of the 35th Division with Guardsmen from Kansas and Missouri. A first since 1947, the superior rating follows an excellent previous year and summer camp superiority. Muster day on February 18 will showcase equipment with a display at the Community Building, followed by a Guard recruitment dance that evening.
Two U S fliers freed from a Russian prison were invited by the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce to vacation at Jekyll Island with their families. Captain John McKone declined the offer saying he cannot get away now, while Captain Freeman Olmstead had not yet replied.
William Chester Cole 22 a former Fort Myers prison escapee and life convict surrendered to FBI agents in Gulf Breeze Florida He had been among the FBI ten most wanted since last Thursday after escaping Aug 6 with six other prisoners He telephoned to say the heat of pursuit made flight useless and expressed relief that it was over.
Carter, Pulitzer prize winning Southern editor of the Delta Democrat-Times in Greenville Mississippi, will speak on editorial responsibility at the William Allen White lecture. He will receive the National Citation of Journalistic Merit and is noted for anti intolerance work and a 1946 Pulitzer for a Nisei unit piece.
The 12th annual American Legion Pancake Day will be held Saturday March 4 in Lawrence. Doors open 7 a.m. with pancakes sausages and coffee served. admission 50 cents. Proceeds fund the junior Legion baseball program aiding a state championship history and district dominance. About 100 Legionnaires auxiliary members and players will work the event with donations from local businesses and Gemmell's Cafe providing batter facilities.
A one and a half inch snowstorm disabled roads causing 17 accidents and several injuries in Lawrence. Police warn of dangerous ice as freezing temperatures linger. 127 crashes so far this year. Street crews sanded intersections and cleared highways to curb hazards tonight.
