Peace Officer training school to open in Lawrence
About 200 men from more than 100 towns are expected for the first annual Kalas Peace Officer Training School in Lawrence. The University of Kansas bureau of government research sponsors the event with extensive participation from state police, city police, the FBI, and military representatives. The nine day program includes housing in fraternity houses, attendance by Highway Patrol, Topeka Army Air Field, Fort Leavenworth, and various law enforcement officials. First Chute Jump in Antarctica at Little America
A. London of Oklahoma City made what appeared to be the first parachute jump onto the south polar continent from a U.S. Army Air Forces transport at Little America. Second Roof Blaze Adds Damage to Henderson Home
A second roof blaze yesterday afternoon badly damaged the roof of Mrs. J. T. Henderson’s home at P10 Rhode Island Street before firefighters subdued the flames. Earlier, a fire at Mr. and Mrs. Orville Stime’s house at 1198 Connecticut Street had been extinguished. A woman passerby warned residents after seeing smoke, wind fueled sparks from a nearby tree and roof shingles. The occupants evacuated as crews sprayed water onto the fire. Chief Paul Vasota cited wind-driven embers as the likely cause. The Henderson building is insured. Shaw Finishes New Play at 90 but offers only that it is topical in nature.
