Funeral services are set for 2 p m Monday for Mrs Jennie Holder 63 of 1140 Pa St who died Thursday at the Doulas County Convalescent Home in Coffeyville. Rev Glenn J Muncy of the First Baptist Church will conduct at the Ford Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Lake Creek Cemetery east of Coffeyville.

Fewer than 30 Brazilian mutineers seized control off Recife forcing the Santa Maria to dock after a 2800 mile detour. About 600 passengers and 366 crew rushed ashore as the ship re entered harbor amid threats of further mutiny. Americans sheltered by locals while Pan American Airways offered flights home. The hijackers, led by Galvao, claim Communist plots and still hold some crew members aboard. The frigate Pero Lobo and other ships waited offshore ready to compel a return to port if the liner attempted escape.
Krimminger sells Jayhawk Motors at 1040 Vt. St. to L. R. Oakleaf Jr. of Independence and John R. Stanley of Joplin. Oakleaf Stanley Motors will keep Pontiac and Cadillac, retain staff, hire two more, and move mainly to Lawrence. Mrs. Oakleaf and Mrs. Stanley become vice presidents.
E A McFarland of Kansas University spoke to the Lawrence Kiwanis Club on aging issues. He noted aging ranges, rising numbers, and a three fold problem: finances, retirement in business, and lifelong education leading to retraining and new schooling across life stages. By 1980 the 65 plus group may reach 25 million with 120 years life expectancy by 2000.

The U S Treasury will offer 6.9 billion dollars in 18 month notes at 3 14 percent to finance maturing securities and bolster cash as recession dims tax intake. Officials aim to attract corporate funds, avoid cash demands, and support Kennedy rate reduction goals while stabilizing gold concerns.
The emergency unemployment benefits proposed by President Kennedy could cost up to 1 billion dollars depending on unemployment levels and state participation. Congress planned early action with bipartisan support while some employers opposed the measure. The plan would use federal funds initially and later be repaid from payroll tax base expansion, offering up to 13 additional weeks of benefits at about 34 dollars weekly.
Former Gov. and Mrs. George Docking became voting residents of Arkansas City this week. They registered at City Hall with 925 N. Second, Docking now a director of the U S Export-Import Bank, and Mrs. Docking will reside in Washington D C where residents lack voting rights. Last July the Dockings sold their Lawrence residence and Arkansas City became their home mailing address.

Mrs. Cecil Robert Harberson of Wichita and her husband and fellow travelers, nine nationalities aboard the ship Santa Manana, endured a seizure by rebels led by Capt. Henrique Galvao. They described fear for the children and slow official communication as they awaited release hours after the January 23 event. The voyage included long delays, repeated gunfire in films, and humor about manana as the rebels claimed to be “visionary revolutionaries.” Sperm oil from whales remains valuable for its temperature stability.

Mrs. Doris Lindt, principal of McAllaster School, asks residents northeast of town to look for a pair of blue plastic framed girl’s glasses lost by a child on the way home from school Tuesday evening. The glasses may be on Connecticut Avenue between 13th and 14th or on 13th Street between Connecticut and New York. Call the school office.
Dr Kenneth E Jochim chairman of the Kansas University Physics Department resigns from KU to join H W Shirer in forming a General Motors research lab in Warren Michigan. The family will relocate this Saturday leaving Lawrence after 1946 residence. Their son Michael aged 15 will accompany them while Keith 19 remains as a KU sophomore to finish the year.
