The White House said Kennedy was pleased with the outcome after Democrats gained two committee seats and Republicans gained one. The new panel will have 10 Democrats and 5 Republicans, with two Republican vacancies remaining and a history of Republican and conservative Southern Democrat influence.
Simons, a 1951 journalism graduate, was a Kansas football guard and punter and returned to the Lawrence Journal World after Marine service. He later served as director and vice president of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary. Mrs. Rustemeyer, class of 1931, active alumnae leader in Kappa Kappa Gamma, former Leavenworth KU Alumni club president, now national director of membership.

Local chairmen were Mrs. CC T Dockery in Lawrence and Mrs. Jean Murphy in Eudora with Crusaders Hat Red Club providing transportation for a third year.

Rudolph Kasper Glatthaar of Route 4 a retired farmer died Tuesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Born July 3 1876 in Paris Illinois he was the son of Josephine and Xavier Glatthaar. Survived by his wife Fannie and his foster daughter Winnifred Getto. Funeral Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. He was a Valparaiso graduate and worked as a hotel bookkeeper in Kansas City before coming to Lawrence in 1900 to dairy farm. He and Fannie Ritzman observed their 60th wedding anniversary New Year’s Day. He had been an invalid for 13 years after a stroke but remained active and followed Kansas University and Kansas State games.
A 17 ounce baby boy born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Bowlin of 1747 Tenn. St. died early today after living almost 24 hours in a resuscitator. The physician said life expectancy for such a small baby is almost zero and noted the infant’s surprisingly normal responses at birth. Mrs. Bowlin was reported in good condition at the hospital.
Junius Underwood, a Lawrence National Bank vice president, leaves after seven years with the bank following gall bladder surgery. He will remodel 1117 Mass. St. for a real estate small loan and insurance firm, citing eye trouble and a wish to work away from banking. Executive vice president Riley Burcham wishes him health and success.
Dr. William Cottle professor of education and assistant director of KU Guidance Bureau will join Boston College as professor of education and director of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Program starting September 1961. He serves as president of the American Catholic Psychological Association and immediate past president of the National Vocational Guidance Association. He has 14 years at KU since 1952. Mrs. Cottle active in Lawrence civic groups and hospital board.
Continued buildup to 2,000 Minute men on station. experts foresee the missile gap narrowing as the U S and Russia approach parity in long range missiles, with many predicting equal numbers by 1965.
After nearly 90 miles the chimp Ham was returned to the Donner. Sailors removed the hatch exposing the chamber where Ham rode. Ham vocalized and appeared well as Benson fed him apple slices and checked his vitals aboard the ship.
In a special session the City Commission awarded $652,000 in general obligation bonds for municipal works completed last year. The low bid group, Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. of Chicago and associates, won at an average 2.589 percent. Cost over 10 years estimated at $92,740. TOPEKA AP Gov John Anderson says he will urge the Senate to reject confirmations of some appointments made by former Gov George Docking. He will not reveal specific names but will discuss them with a Senate committee. A Republican panel has been named to review each appointment individually.
On the Demeritt farm nine miles southwest of Lawrence, 72 year old Demeritt has trapped five coyotes and three foxes near his chicken house. He notes unusually high predator activity. Meanwhile seven upright pianos from School District No. 98 will be auctioned at Lawrence Transfer and Storage on Friday at 3 p.m. One item is a Bell Bros. upright made in Lawrence by Bell Music Co.
