Kansas basketball self-imposed penalties cost KU millions
KU suspended head coach Bill Self and Kurtis Townsend for four games before the 2022 season as a preemptive move amid NCAA scrutiny. The university spent more than $1.7 million in 2023 alone on legal fees across six firms, with total costs rising since 2017. Athletics director Travis Goff said the expenditures, funded from private revenue, aimed to protect the KU brand and long-term enrollment.
