Southwest Kansas cotton hit by 2 4 D drift hurts yields
Cotton in southwest Kansas faced a harsh season with estimated losses of 40 to 50 percent due to herbicide drift from 2,4-D spraying. Growers like Tom Lahey warned the crop suffered despite good management, with drought and irrigation shaping an uncertain outlook for future acreage and production. Local cooperatives report lower ginning, while industry advocates see potential if 2,4-D tolerant varieties arrive in 2015.
