Miss Edna Peterson a nursing supervisor at Lawrence Memorial Hospital became a patient after a fall in front of the hospital last Thursday. She had surgery Friday and expects a six week stay in the hospital.
City Commission and Planning Commission met to set guidelines for joint work and improve coordination. They discussed when Planning recommendations are rejected and the need for clear reasons, timing, and future considerations for zoning, business areas, housing codes, and in city industrial development along the Santa Fe tracks.
Mrs Fern Bernau Carey 62 of 1300 Oak Hill Ave died Monday at home. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Thursday at North Lawrence Christian Church with Rev Maurice Bigger. Burial Hubbel Hill Cemetery Tonganoxie. Rumsey Funeral Home call through noon Thursday. Word comes that Larry Preston Cox a Kansas University engineering freshman from Fredonia died December 26 at age 18. Cox who lived at the KU Kappa Sigma fraternity was injured December 23 when his car collided with a train near Fredonia. Funeral services were held in Fredonia. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Eber M Cox of Fredonia. The Dutch who first explored Australia in 1613 called the land New Holland.
Western powers tentatively set May 16 for the Paris summit after Khrushchev requested a later date. Informants said Eisenhower de Gaulle and Macmillan proposed the new date in notes to Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko, replacing the earlier April 27 suggestion amid discussions of April 21 or May 4 options.
In Kansas City a rejected suitor fatally injured Janet Scott Hill 17 and Erskine Virgil Scott Jr. 12, wounded their mother Frances Scott 38, and died after a confrontation at the home. Earl Jones 26, who had dated Hill, forced entry and fatally shot himself after the assault. Hadley Craddock 21, engaged to Hill, struggled with him but was knocked down.
In Las Vegas Nevada three Kansas City teens James ChilDress 16 Gary Phoenix 18 and Howard Waggoner 18 arrested for robbery admit assaulting a couple in Merriam Kansas. They allegedly entered through a garage bound the husband raped his wife and fled with 125 dollars before driving to Las Vegas.
William E. Bradford announced Gerald L. Cooley a Lawrence attorney as Douglas County chairman for the 1960 Heart Fund. The February campaign involves local directors including Kenneth E. Anderson Monti Belot Jr. Olin Petefish and George Smith as organizers for the Heart Sunday drive.
At 7 this morning two miles west of the Bonner Springs interchange a car struck the rear of an eastbound truck injuring Maynard Cox 42 of Topeka. Cox suffered cuts and bruises but Spencer the driver of the truck was unhurt. Cox received a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The line attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson questions reliance on quotes and urges speak for oneself. It reflects a call for original thought from a renowned American essayist and poet.

Lawrence District Court jurors will not report on January 4 as scheduled. Clerk of the court, Mrs. Lucille Allison, stated no new return date has been set and jurors will be notified when to reunite.
Sheriff Everette Stovern said he was told by Adjutant General Joseph E. Nelson to prepare for the withdrawal of the National Guard from the Wilson and Co. meat packing plant in Albert Lea. Local authorities should be ready to assume law enforcement duties as the plant resumes with nonunion workers after martial law ended. No incidents occurred as United Packinghouse Workers Union members kept the peace.
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co announces a four million dollar expansion for its Topeka facility to enable manufacturing two ton earth moving tires. The new tires, ten feet tall and four feet wide, are currently produced only at the Akron plant. About 100 jobs will be added upon completion in 196. Construction should start in spring.
In Afton Wyoming a severe cold snap freezes pipes eighteen inches deep cutting water to 60 of 400 farms. Milk output falls as cows lose weight and butter-fat rises with icy water intake. Farmers ask for state aid and disaster declaration but governor declines.
The inquiry board asked Cooper to present later a formal statement of the industry view on settlement recommendations by outsiders. The suggestion had been raised by Secretary.

Springfield AP reports Mrs. James Mitchell died Monday as a fifth person succumbs to injuries from a Missouri farm blaze. The incident, under investigation, drew attention to farm safety and potential causes local authorities have not released.
A fire that destroyed the Mitchell farmhouse 14 miles east of Marshfield, Missouri, claimed the life of a fifth victim. Two of her children and two grandchildren died in the flames Saturday, while another daughter Carol Ann, 13, suffered serious burns and remained in a Springfield hospital.
