Helsinki reports heavy Soviet attacks across the Leningrad Viipuri axis and near Lake Suvanto in eastern Karelia. Finnish communiques claim 300 Russians killed in Sysky lake area and multiple Soviet tanks destroyed while ski incursions target Murmansk railway.
Ankara reports the earthquake in Anatolia may push the death toll to about 50,000 as cold starvation and disease threaten survivors. The notice also mentions changes in Soviet military leadership and censorship actions by the Kremlin in reaction to foreign dispatches.

Copenhagen December 29. Reports said Russian troops and sharpshooters trained for alpine warfare were en route to Finland from Siberia to accelerate the campaign against the Finns. Other battalions from the Caucasus and Cossack cavalry regiments were being rushed north to replace tank units frustrated in combat.
German ambassador Hans-Georg Viktor von Mackensen departed Rome for Berlin for periodic consultations with his government. Reports indicate he left yesterday as the new term approaches at Lawrence Business College starting January 2.

Washington reports the agriculture department will suspend its wheat and flour export subsidy program effective January 4 with the exception of flour exports from Pacific coast ports to the Philippines. Subidies will be paid on all flour sold for export until 2 p.m. EST January 3 due to favorable domestic prices and an expected light wheat crop.
Thomas J. Pendergast, former Kansas City political boss now in prison for tax evasion, reportedly settled about 350000 dollars of the treasury civil claims. The settlement would wipe roughly 707090 dollars of claims against the Kansas City district, with no official treasury statement yet pending legal details.

He noted nine German submarines destroyed and the army hoping to end the war perhaps in two years.
Eight scientists from Lawrence Kansas represented the city at the winter meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Columbus Ohio from December 27 to January 2. The lineup includes G B Price and H B Hungerford of Kansas University among many colleagues with ties to the university and state institutions. More than 6 000 scientists were scheduled to attend and 1600 papers were listed for the week.

Wells in many school yards have run dry due to fall weather and children now carry water along with lunch. A complete survey of the school water situation will be made after the Christmas holidays.

The Social Service League and Journal World will oversee donations to fund shoes for needy school children with funds reported publicly.
The St. Joseph Gazette reports Don Faurot has verbally agreed to move from Missouri to Stanford to coach football with a five year plan. Faurot will be paid about 8500 dollars annually at Stanford and would bring Chauncey Simpson and John Simmons with him. Missouri contract ends that Sunday and Stanford is said to be set for after January first.
The Union Young People's group will host a party Saturday evening from 8 to 12 at the Episcopal church. Charles Yeomans will lead games followed by dancing. The Rev. Harold Barr of First Christian Church will speak Sunday at 6 30 PM at First Presbyterian Church with a social hour after.
Final census figures show heart disease caused 350,168 of the 1,381,391 deaths in 1938, with cancer 149,214 and cerebral hemorrhage group 111,567. Automobile accidents claimed 32,582 lives.
